i have 5 olive trees brought from california to south florida 2 years ago, they were topped at 7 feet, each has 3 leaders, root crowns average 5 feet. the leaders are about 8 inches at the heading cut and have sprouted some 16 inch sprouts in that time. leaves look good but growth is nothing like what i expected??? could it be a root problem? also, trunk base is black, almost like a sooty mold? any ideas? please help. bob k

Thank you for your mail:

Olive trees are one of the strongest trees of the world, The can survive in extreme situations. From desert temperatures to the snow hills of Granada (spain). If you water the tree so once in a wile there is no problem to plant them in doors. The tree needs light so it must be a bright space.

If you have more questions please let me know, I will be happy to answer,

Regards,

Hi Robert.
Removing sucker growth is probably the most annoying part of looking after your trees. As far as I know there’s no chemicals that get rid of the suckers. When pruning, start at the bottom (the suckers), and work your way up. You will find that you’ll only have to work hard on removing the suckers for the first 2 years. After that, they tend to grow less and less. When pruning higher up the tree you should leave a ‘stub’ of branch when you cut, but with suckers, you can be brutal., the closer to the trunk, the better. Leaving even the smallest stub will give you lots more work the following year.
